Curtis Fuller’s solos on Five Spot After Dark and Five Spot After Dark (Alternate Take) from the album Blues-ette (1959) with motivic analysis included. I decided to write out a motivic analysis to highlight the similarities between two takes of the same tune. The presence of so many similarities as well as brilliant variations on each idea demonstrate clear preparation ahead of the recording date. This set of two transcriptions is a masterclass in how to hang on a minor blues.
