Fast Music (2024)

Wind Ensemble

Grade 4

Originally written in 2018 and revised in 2024. Winner of the 2019 Treasure Valley Composition Competition hosted by Boise State University. Premiered 6/28/24 by Kingsville Winds, directed by Carlos Navarro.

The music that I wrote during my early composing years was aggressive and frustrated. My first mature work, Fast Music, represents an attempt at writing something positive and beautiful. A very simple, reassuring F major melody is tested against the modes of F Lydian, D Dorian, and D minor. In the manner of an unstoppable hero, the timpani and other low voices provide thunderous yet melodic accompaniment. The influence of the marching arts on this piece cannot be understated. The title suggests that the music is non-programmatic, which is true. While there is no story to accompany this piece, it was written during a pivotal time in my life that involved casting away my innate nihilism and opening up to friends who showed me great compassion. When listening to or preparing this work, think about a period of time when you had to become vulnerable to bring about change.

NOTICE: Purchase includes both score and parts.
