Mark Williams’ (3rd trombone, The Count Basie Orchestra) solo on Frank Foster’s Blues in Hoss’ Flat from a live video recording of The Count Basie Orchestra at Avalon Theater (Easton, MD, 2019). This video was the first time I heard Mark play, and his connection to the blues tradition and depth of harmonic knowledge were shocking to me. This is one of two Mark Williams solos on Blues in Hoss’ Flat that I have transcribed; both are equally groovy. In fact, the best solo I have heard from Mark Williams was on this exact tune when The Count Basie Orchestra performed at The 75th Midwest Clinic in 2021. It was the only time an improvised solo has made me tear up during a concert. I wish I recorded it.
